….In the heart of one of the Peruvian National protected areas – TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE – In the south Eastern Peru; one of the most divers birding region on Earth, with 600+ species of birds. Where is found the Largest Macaw Clay Lick in South America, known as “COLLPA COLORADO” with up to 13 different species of psittacidae (Macaws, Parrots, Parakeets and Parrotlets) that visit every morning. This clay lick become famous after the 4 pages of National Geographic article published in 1994. And nearby it’s also the “CHUNCHO” Macaw…

And nearby it’s also the “CHUNCHO” Macaw Clay Lick where we can see the 3 large and colorful Macaw together in great numbers, at the same time and of course some of the small macaws as well and many Parrot species.

The destination combines lot of Macaws (Blue-and-yellow, Scarlet, Red-and-green, Red-bellied, Chestnut-fronted and Blue-headed Macaw) with great Lowland Rainforest bird species such: Orinoco Goose, Razor-billed Curassow, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Pavonive Quetzal, White-throated Jacamar and more, and the amazing group of BAMBOO SPECIALIST such: the Peruvian Recurvebill, White-checked Tody-Flycatcher, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Bamboo Antshrike, Manu Antbird, Striated Antbird, and many more.

The destination use three different Lodges (Posada Amazonas Lodge, Refugio Amazonas Lodge and Tambopata Research Center) with great accommodation and fantastic food; where we can combine all the Lowland Rainforest habitats (Terra firme, Floodplain forest, Secondary forest, Bamboo forest, Palm swamp, Ox-bow Lakes and River banks).

And of course great opportunities to see good numbers of mammals species; 7 species of Monkeys, Wild picks, the Giant River Otter, and a pretty good chance of finding the majestic Jaguar.

Day 1: PUERTO MALDONADO TO POSADA AMAZONAS LODGE

Upon arrival from Lima or Cusco we will welcome you at the airport and drive to the Tambopata River port via Infierno road with some birding stops along the way were we may see Scaled Pigeon, Yellow Tyrannulet, etc. And during the 50 minutes boat ride to the Lodge we may see some Macaws species flying by such Red-and-green Macaw and Scarlet Macaw and Blue-and-yellow Macaw, and also White-winged, White Banded and Southern Rough-winged Swallow and on the beaches or River bank Pied Lapwing, Drab Water-Tyrant, Greater and Smooth-billed Anni and more. After arrival to the Lodge we will do some trails walk were we will focus on looking for under-store and canopy mix-species flocks. And after dinner our first owling opportunity to look for Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Mottled Owl, Spectacled Owl and Crested Owl and Ocellated Poorwill and Long-tailed Potoo. Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge.

Day 2: FULL DAY AT POSADA AMAZONAS LODGE - CANOPY TOWER AND TERRA FIRME FOREST

In the morning we will go to the canopy tower of 37 mts – 120 feet  easy access to reach to the top where we will have a good chance to see Blue-headed Macaw and also good opportunities to see White-throated Toucan, Channel-billed Toucan, Curl-crested Aracari, Ivory-billed Aracari, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Letter Aracari, Pygmy Owl, White-necked Puffbird, Gilded Barbet, Western Striolated Puffbird, Bat Falcon, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Red-bellied Macaw, Scarlet Macaw, Red-and-green Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, and Mealy Parrot, Yellow-crowned Parrot and more. And the rest of the day we will be birding the trails system of the Lodge that covers terra-firme forest and floodplain forest; where we will be looking for Pale-winged Trumpeter, Paradise Jacamar, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Round-tailed Manakin, Screaming Piha, White-bearded Manakin, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Black-tailed, Amazonian, Green-backed, Collared and Collared Trogon and a little chance of Pavonine Quetzal and also we will be looking for understory mix-specie flock with Dusky-throated Antshrike, White-flanked Antwren, Long-winged Antwren, Plain Xenops, and more. And some others species like Thrush-like Antpitta, Rufous, Broad-billed and Amazonian Motmot, Little and Bartlett’s Tinamou, and more. Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge.

Day 3: FULL DAY AT POSADA AMAZONAS

In the morning we will be birding another site of terra-firme forest where we have some special target like the very secretive Brazilian Tinamou among others like White-throated Tinamou, Variegated Tinamou, Bartlett’s Tinamou and Great Tinamou and Blue-backed Manakin, Pavonine Quetzal, Great Jacamar and also there is a great understory mix-specie flock with Dusky-throated, Bluish-slate and Plain-Winged Antshrike, White-flanked, Long-winged, and Gray Antwren, Rufous-rumped, Chestnut-winged and Olive-backed Foliage-gleaner, Plain Xenops, Chestnut-winged Hookbill and more. Also can be found canopy mix-specie flock with White-winged Shrike Tanager, Paradise, Green-and-gold, Turquoise Tanager, Chestnut-shouldered Antwren and more. During the rest of the day we will keep birding around the Lodge trail system looking for more understory and canopy mix flocks. Overnight at Posada Amazonas Lodge.

Day 4: TRES-CHIMBADAS OX-BOW LAKE - POSADA AMAZONAS LODGE TO TAMBOPATA RECEARCH CENTER

Morning to the Tres-Chimbada Ox-bow Lake where apart from birds there is also an active family of Giant River Otters but we will be mainly focus in bird species of two different habitat; the Lake itself and bamboo forest; at the Lake itself we can look for Gray-breasted and Rufous-sided Crake, Ringed Kingfisher, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Green-and-rufous Kingfisher, Agami Heron, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Capped Heron, Striated Heron, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Black-capped Donacobius, Red-capped Cardinal, Silvered Antbird and the impressive Hoatzin and a lot more. And in the BAMBOO forest we will look for some of the bamboo specialist, we will look for Peruvian Recurvebill, Bamboo Antshrike, and White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, Large-headed Flatbill, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, Flamulated Pygmy-Tyrant, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-capped Nunlet, Yellow-breasted Warbling Antbird and more. And about mid-morning – boat ride to Tambopata Research Center where we will look along the Tambopata River bank for Orinoco Goose, Razor-billed Curassow, Large and Yellow-billed Tern, Ring and Amazon Kingfisher, Pied Plover, Collared Plover, Sunbittern, and more. And apart from birds this stretch it’s a good chance to see Jaguars on the River bank; and we will be arriving in the late afternoon to the Lodge. <strong>Overnight at Tambopata Research Center.</strong>

DAY 5, 6 and 7: FULL DAYS AT TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER

During this 3 full days we will be birding around the Lodge that has a great trail system covering habitats such bamboo forest, terra firme, floodplain forest, palm swamp and islands. And this is the Lodge that has the <strong>world’s largest Macaw clay lick</strong> where we can see up to 13 different species at the clay lick in the morning and this is one of the best places for Blue-headed Macaw and White-bellied Parrot that comes down to the Clay lick and lots of Red-and-green Macaw, Scarlet and Blue-and-yellow Macaw but also the three small macaw species…. Chestnut-fronted Macaw and Red-bellied Macaw and among all this small macaws also we can see Yellow-crowned Parrot, Mealy Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Orange-checked Parrot and Dusky-headed Parakeet, White-eyed Parakeet, Cobalt-winged Parakeet plus the uncommon Amazonian Parrotlet and Dusky-billed Parrotlet. And during the rest of the days we will look for some <strong>important targets</strong> such Razor-billed Curassow, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Pavonine Quetzal, Amazonian Antpitta, Rufous-fronted Antthrush, Undulated Antshrike, Ash-throated Gnateater, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga, Band-tailed and Round-tailed Manakin, Sunbittern and more. Also we will look for <strong>bamboo forest specialist</strong> such Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Bamboo Antshrike, Striated Antbird, Goeldi’s Antbird, White-lined Antbird, Ornate Antwren, Ihering’s Antwren, Brown-rumped Foliage-gleaner, Red-billed Scythebill, Dusky-tailed and Large-headed Flatbill, White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher and more. And also we will be looking for <strong>understory mix-specie</strong> flocks where we can see Elegant Woodcreeper, Olive-baked Foliage-gleaner, Red-crowned Ant-Tanager, Dusky-throated, Bluish-slate and Plain-winged Antshrike, White-flanked, Long-winged and Gray Antwren, Sepia-capped Flycatcher. Also there is some good <strong>canopy mix-specie flocks</strong> where we will look for Spot-winged Antshrike, Lineated Woodcreeper, Chestnut-winged Hookbill, Chestnut-winged Foliage-gleaner, Chestnut-shouldered Antwren, Sclare’s Antwren, Pygmy Antwren, White-winged Shrike-Tanager, White-shouldered Tanager, Opal-rumped and Opal-crown Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Guira Tanager, Yellow-backed Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Rufous-tailed Xenops, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Rufous-bellied Euphonia, White-vented Euphonia, Golden-bellied Euphonia, Purple Honeycreeper, Green Honeycreeper, Grayish Mourner, Wing-barred Manakin and more. But also in all this different type of ecosystem there is Gray Tinamou, Great Tinamou, Black-capped Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, Bartlett’s Tinamou, Undulated Tinamou, Little Tinamou. Also some beautiful Trogons such Green-backed, Amazonian (Violaceous), Black-tailed, Blue-crowned, Collared Trogon and apart from Trogons Striolated and Semicollared Puffbird, Royal Flycatcher, Black-tailed Leaftooser, Black-faced, Rufous-capped, Striated  and Rufous-fronted Antthrush, Amazonian Anpitta and more. One morning we will be birding at the fish pond where we can see Razor-billed Curassow, Green and Amazon Kingfisher, Sunbittern, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Buff-fronted Foliage-gleaner, Black-banded Woodcreeper and more. And at this Lodge is good for owling with good number of nocturnal bird species such Crested Owl, Spectacled Owl, Black-banded Owl, Mottled Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Tropical Screech-Owl, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Amazonian Pygmy-Owl, Ocellated Poorwill, Common Pauraque, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Long-tailed Potoo, Common Potoo, and Great Potoo. <strong>Overnight at Tambopata Recearch Center.</strong>

DAY 8 : TAMBOPATA RECEARCH CENTER TO REFUGIO AMAZONAS

Travel day to Refugio Amazonas with a stop at CHUNCHO Macaw Clay Lick where we will have a good chance to see the 3 large macaw’s species (Red-and-green, Scarlet and Blue-and-yellow Macaw) at the clay lick. In the afternoon after lunch we will be birding in the little bamboo forest searching for some of the bamboo specialist that we may be missing. And after dinner we will look for some missing nocturnal birds that at this Lodge is good for Tropical Screech-Owl, Black-banded Owl, Ocellated Poorwill, Great and Long-tailed Potoo. <strong>Overnight at Refugio Amazonas Lodge. </strong>

DAY 9: FULL DAY AT REFUGIO AMAZONAS LODGE

At this Lodge we will be looking for missing species in the under-story and canopy mix-specie flocks. And some of the main targets we will be looking at this Lodge are: Brazilian Tinamou, Variegated Tinamou, White-throated Tinamou, Pavonine Quetzal, Paradise Jacamar, Brown-banded Puffbird (found at this area recently), Collared Puffbird, Banded Antbird, Ringed Woodpecker, Red-headed and Blue-crowned Manakin, Royal Flycatcher and more. <strong>Overnight at Refugio Amazonas Lodge.</strong>

DAY 10 REFUGIO AMAZONAS TO PUERTO MALDONADO – END OF THE TRIP

After early breakfast we will take the 2 ½ hours boat ride down river to Puerto Maldonado to take the fly to Lima or Cusco.
